Welcome to Belgium, Wisconsin!  We are excited to have you visit us.

OUR LUXEMBOURGISH ROOTS

Founded predominantly by Luxembourgish immigrants in the 1800s, Belgium, Wisconsin was incorporated in 1922.   The area has stayed true to its roots, and the Luxembourgish heritage is still apparent in the community.

From the Luxembourgish flags that line Main Street to the annual celebration of Luxembourg Fest the second weekend in August, and even the Luxembourg-inspired street names throughout the community, you are sure to learn more about the tiny European country of Luxembourg when visiting Belgium. 

Belgium is home to the Luxembourg American Cultural Society, an international non-profit.  The society's center includes the Roots & Leaves Museum, housed in an 1872 Luxembourgish-built stone barn dismantled several miles away and rebuilt on its current foundation in 2008.  It also boasts a gift shop and the Dooley-Wagner Research Center, the largest research center of its kind outside of the Grand Duchy.

So why is it called Belgium if the community is so Luxembourgish?  The short story is that the name Luxemberg, Wisconsin was already claimed by a community north of us.  The area of Luxembourg that many immigrants hailed from had been annexed by Belgium in 1839, not too long before many emigrated, so despite being raised as Luxembourgers, speaking Luxembourgish and maintaining Luxembourish traditions, the passports carried by the immigrants were from Belgium, making that name the next best thing to help tell their story.

WHAT TO DO IN BELGIUM, WI

Belgium, Wisconsin is located in the northern-most point of Ozaukee County.  A small rural community with a population of 2,439, visitors find the area to be safe, relaxing, and friendly.

RECREATION:

Harrington Beach State Park: The Village of Belgium is located a little more than a mile from the entrance to Harrington Beach State Park. This park boasts more than a mile of stunning Lake Michigan beaches, perfect for strolling, swimming, or simply sitting to watch the waves and read your favorite book.  Harrington also offers camping, an observatory center for star-gazing, the Ansay Welcome Center, rentable for events, fishing at Puckett's Pond and an opportunity to hike around the 26-acre Quarry Lake, which was a former working stone quarry. Throughout the park you can learn more about this quarry, as the park was formerly a small company town owned by Lake Shore Stone company, called Stonehaven. Remnants of buildings and homesteads still exist and are marked throughout the park.

Ozaukee Interurban Trail: If biking, skiing, and running is your thing, definitely check out this FREE 30-mile paved trail, located on the former route of the Electric Interurban Railway. Parking can be found in Belgium near Main Street and the railroad crossing west of Elm Street.  The portion of the trail between Port Washington and Belgium is left unplowed in winter, making it the perfect location for cross-country skiing when weather permits. The trail connects the communities of Ozaukee County from Mequon north through Belgium and beyond. It is located between Milwaukee County's Oak Leaf trail and Sheboygan County's Plank Road Trail and east of the Eisenbahn State Trail in Washington County.

ENTERTAINMENT

Memories Ballroom: Known as "Your Live Entertainment Destination," this beautiful facility built in 1934 as a big band-era dance hall now offers a rustically elegant ambiance for dinner theater, audience-interactive murder mysteries and its famous Chicken Comedy nights.

Buechler Farms: This warm & welcoming farm is the source of lots of fun events throughout the year.  You can expect lots of live music, a Kentucky Derby party, Ladies Day Out, Harvest Fest in fall and its "Not Just a Tree" sale around Christmas.  Also known for its annual rodeo, weddings, special events, & more!

2024 LOCAL EVENTS

Belgium is a vibrant, family-friendly community with unique events and gatherings happening throughout the year.  Annual community events planned by the Chamber include:

Buergbrennen (NEW!): Join us as we kick off a tradition that is new to us but hundreds of years old in Luxembourg- BUERGBRENNEN.  Help us burn away winter and welcome in spring at Buechler Farms Saturday, March 2nd, 2024.

Belgium Easter Egg Hunt: Saturday, March 30th, 2024 at 11 am.

Belgium Brew & Chew- Annual Chamber Fundraiser taking place April 27th, 2024 from 5:30- 9:00 pm at Buechler Farms.

Belgium Summer Nights LIVE:
